Balenciaga City vs Hourglass: Sizes, Wear and Which to Choose

Most people choose between the Balenciaga City and the Hourglass on looks alone, and that is usually where the regret starts. Here is the surprise: the two bags are far closer in size than they appear. A Mini City we have listed measures 23.5 cm across, and a Small Hourglass measures 23 cm. What separates them is everything else: how they open, how much they hold, how they sit on the body and how the leather ages.

They also come from different chapters of the same house. The City grew out of the Motorcycle bag, which Balenciaga introduced while Nicolas Ghesquière was artistic director, according to the history of Balenciaga. The Hourglass arrived much later and is named for its curved, nipped in outline. One is soft and worn in; the other is sharp and sculpted.

Shape and Structure: Soft City vs Sculpted Hourglass

The City is built to relax. Its leather is soft, the body has no rigid frame, and the bag folds in on itself a little when you put it down. That slouch is the point. Add the studs, the side buckles and the long leather tassels on the zips, and you get a bag that looks better slightly lived in than box fresh.

The Hourglass is the opposite. The body holds its shape whether it is full or empty, the base curves upward in the middle, and the front flap closes with a single metal B. There is very little decoration, so the outline does all the talking. It reads as dressed up even with jeans.

Neither approach is better. The honest question is how you treat your bags. If you drop yours on the passenger seat and the cafe floor, the City forgives you. If you like a bag that always looks composed, the Hourglass rewards the extra care.

Size and Capacity: What the City Holds vs What the Hourglass Holds

This is where the two bags pull apart. The City comes in a wide run of sizes. In our listings a Nano City measured 18 cm long, 12 cm high and 6 cm deep. Mini City pieces sit around 23.5 to 24 cm long and 6 to 8 cm deep. A Small City measured 30 cm long, 20 cm high and 10 cm deep, and Medium pieces run to 38 cm long, 24 to 25 cm high and 13 to 14 cm deep. A Medium City takes a tablet, a full wallet, a water bottle and a cardigan without complaint.

The Hourglass range we see is tighter. XS pieces measure 19 cm long, 11.5 to 13 cm high and 7 to 8 cm deep. Small pieces measure 23 cm long, 13 to 15 cm high and 9 to 10 cm deep. Because the walls are stiff and the flap has to close flat, the usable space is what the numbers say and no more. Think phone, cards, keys, sunglasses and a lipstick.

A soft bag also stretches around awkward items in a way a structured bag cannot. So a Mini City and a Small Hourglass may share a width, but the City will swallow a bulky sunglasses case that the Hourglass flatly refuses.

Carry Options: City Shoulder Strap vs Hourglass Top Handle

Both bags usually give you two ways to carry, but they feel different in use. On the Mini City pieces we have listed, the strap drop runs from about 44.5 to 54 cm, long enough for the shoulder and, for many people, across the body. The Small City we measured had a 52 cm strap drop. Medium City bags are different: the strap drop on our listings is around 25 cm, so they sit high under the arm or go in the hand, with a handle drop of 11 to 12 cm.

The Hourglass is a top handle bag first. Its single handle has a drop of about 9 to 10 cm on the pieces we have listed, which suits the hand or the crook of the arm. Most also come with a detachable strap. On XS pieces we have seen strap drops from 43 to 60 cm, and on Small pieces from 45 to 55 cm, so some sit on the shoulder and others reach crossbody length. Always check the strap drop on the listing, because it varies from piece to piece and straps sometimes go missing on pre-loved bags.

Leather and Hardware: How the City Ages vs How the Hourglass Ages

City leather is meant to soften. Over time the surface picks up a gentle sheen, the body slouches a little more and the handles darken where your hands sit. Fans of the bag call that character. Bright colours can fade if the bag lives in direct sun, and suede and metallic finishes need more care than plain calfskin or lambskin.

The Hourglass shows wear differently. Smooth box calfskin has a glossy, even surface, so fine scratches are easier to see than on the grained City. Crocodile embossed calfskin is more forgiving, because the texture hides small marks.

On hardware, our listings use PHW for silver tone and GHW for gold tone. City bags add more variety, including antique brass, aged silver and dark ruthenium finishes, and the studs are a large part of the look. The Hourglass keeps it to one B clasp in gold, silver or black. If you wear mostly silver jewellery or mostly gold, match the bag to it and you will reach for it more often.

Pros and Cons: City vs Hourglass Side by Side

Balenciaga City

  • For: generous capacity in the Small and Medium sizes, a zip top that keeps everything secure, and leather that looks good with a bit of wear.
  • For: a wide choice of sizes, colours and hardware on the pre-loved market.
  • Against: the soft body offers little protection for a laptop or tablet, tassels can fray, and the look is too casual for some formal settings.

Balenciaga Hourglass

  • For: a crisp outline that lifts simple outfits, a flap that opens with one hand, and a compact size that never feels heavy.
  • For: a quiet design with a single logo, easy to wear from the office to dinner.
  • Against: limited room, a rigid shape that will not stretch, and smooth leather that shows scratches and corner wear sooner.

Condition Checks: Where a City Wears vs Where an Hourglass Wears

Each bag has its own weak spots, so look in different places depending on which one you are considering.

On a City, check the handles for darkening and cracking, the four base corners for rubbing, and the tassels, which can split or go missing. Run the main zip from end to end, look closely at the studs and buckles for worn plating, and compare the colour on the front with the back and the base to spot fading.

On an Hourglass, start with the two points at either end of the curved base, because they touch every surface the bag is set down on. Then check the edge of the flap, the face of the B clasp for scratches, the base of the handle for creasing, and the strap rings. Ask whether the detachable strap is included.

Every piece we sell is verified by our authentication team before it is listed, and each listing shows a condition grade and the accessories that come with the bag. Resale and Long Term Wear: City vs Hourglass, Honestly

Both bags are established designs with a steady following on the pre-loved market. The City has the longer history and a loyal base of collectors who look for particular colours and hardware. The Hourglass is the more recent design and appeals to buyers who want a current, structured look.

That said, resale value is never guaranteed, and neither bag should be bought on the assumption that it will rise in price. Condition, colour, size and the market at the time all shape what a bag is worth later, and values can fall as well as rise. Classic colours in good condition, kept with their strap and dust bag, are generally easier to sell on. The safer plan is to buy the one you will use often and treat any resale value as a possible bonus.

City or Hourglass: Which One Suits You?

If you are still undecided, answer three questions.

What do you carry on a normal day? If the answer includes a tablet, a water bottle or a make-up bag, choose a Small or Medium City. If it is phone, cards and keys, either bag works and you can choose on style.

Where will the bag go most often? For commuting, school runs, weekends and travel, the City is the easier companion. For dinners, events and a smart office, the Hourglass looks the part.

How do you treat your bags? If you want something you never have to think about, choose the City. If you enjoy looking after a bag and want it to stay crisp, choose the Hourglass.

Plenty of people end up with both: a City for the day and an Hourglass for the evening. Whichever way you lean, pre-loved stock changes week to week and each piece is the only one of its kind. Balenciaga City vs Hourglass FAQ

Is the Balenciaga City bigger than the Hourglass?

In most sizes, yes. Small and Medium City bags are wider and deeper than any Hourglass we have listed. The exception is at the small end: a Mini City and a Small Hourglass are both about 23 cm wide, although the soft City usually fits more.

Can you wear the Balenciaga Hourglass crossbody?

Often, but not always. Most Hourglass bags come with a detachable strap, and on the pieces we have listed the strap drop ranges from about 43 to 60 cm. Check the strap drop on each listing and confirm the strap is included.

Which is better for everyday use, the City or the Hourglass?

For most people the City is the easier everyday bag, because it holds more, zips shut and suits casual wear. The Hourglass works every day if you carry very little and prefer a polished look.

Does a pre-loved Balenciaga bag hold its value?

Well kept City and Hourglass bags in classic colours tend to attract steady interest, but no resale price is guaranteed and values can fall as well as rise. Buy the bag you will enjoy using, and keep the strap and dust bag to help if you sell it later.
